Primary (ECES) Connect - 27 September 2024

Dear Primary (EC/ES) Families,

It was truly inspiring to observe our learners in action this week. It reminded me of the learning principle that learning is personal. Students learn best when they are fully engaged in the task at hand, and it was clear they had a great learning week.

Learning is personal; therefore, students learn when they:

  • feel intrinsically motivated to actively drive their own learning.

  • understand and act upon their learning preferences, strengths, and needs.

  • build upon their own prior knowledge and experiences.

  • use their voices and make choices as related to personal interest, passion and curiosity.

Taking students on a field trip is a powerful extension of the learning that happens within the classroom. It allows students to engage authentic scenarios and to see the practical applications of the concepts they are studying. Field trips provide opportunities to deepen understanding by making learning visible and relevant, whether through cultural exploration, hand-on-activities, or connecting with experts in the field.

While our Grade 5 students are learning about Matter and Energy in Life, they went to Alina’s Garden to deepen their understanding about the subject and our fourth graders expanded  their learning by visiting Nike Art Gallery and exploring the richness of Nigerian art. At AISL, learning happens everywhere! Please read the articles below written by our Grade 5 Team and by our Grade 4 Team.

GRADE 5 FIELD TRIP

GARTNER CALLAWAY

ALINA’S GARDEN

Trip to Alina’s Garden

The fifth-grade students had an engaging and educational adventure during our recent field trip to Gartner Callaway - Alina’s Garden - where they expanded their knowledge about plants and how they obtain the essential materials for their growth. The trip offered a real-world connection to our science unit, Matter and Energy in Life, and we were thrilled to see how much the students learned!

In the garden, students explored the different ways plants rely on air and water for survival. They learned firsthand how plants absorb carbon dioxide from the air and water from the soil, and how these elements play a vital role in their growth and development. This hands-on experience deepened their understanding of the plant life cycle and how critical these resources are for a plant's health.

Additionally, fifth graders discovered a variety of plant species used for different purposes, including food production and beautification. The “farm-to-table” concept came to life as they saw how vegetables are grown locally, reinforcing the importance of sustainable practices and understanding where our food comes from. The beauty and diversity of plants used in landscaping also sparked a lot of curiosity and appreciation for how plants can transform our environment.

We are incredibly proud of how engaged and respectful the students were throughout the day, asking insightful questions and working together as a team. This field trip truly brought our classroom lessons to life, and we hope your children came home with a renewed sense of curiosity and excitement about the natural world.

Thank you for your continued support in helping us create such meaningful learning experiences for your children. We look forward to more opportunities like this in the future!

GRADE 4 FIELD TRIP

Nike Art Gallery:

Exploring Nigerian Art & Culture

Grade 4 Trip to Nike Art Gallery: Exploring Nigerian Art and Culture

This week, our Grade 4 students visited the renowned Nike Art Gallery as part of our ongoing Unit of Inquiry on Nigerian culture. The trip provided an incredible opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the rich artistic heritage of Nigeria. They explored a variety of traditional and contemporary artworks, learning how art plays a vital role in expressing cultural identity and history.

This experience directly tied into our unit, as students gained a deeper understanding of how art reflects cultural values and traditions. Through engaging with the artists and their stories, the students developed a greater appreciation for the diversity and beauty of Nigerian culture. Despite the rainy weather, the students were captivated by the vibrant pieces on display and even had the chance to express their own creativity.

We look forward to continuing this exploration in the classroom!
