Admissions Process

New students coming to AISL will gain admission based upon official school records for the last two years, which show the student to be succeeding at or above the average of their classmates in a mainstreamed classroom.

From a U.S. Based System

Students who enter from schools with a primarily U.S. based curriculum are placed with their age group, provided they have successfully completed the appropriate number of years in school. The U.S. system of education usually calls for one year of Kindergarten at age 5 for a total of 13 years of school. University entrance is normally at age 18. Students who enter from U.S. curriculum schools or from other international schools with the same calendar will be place on the basis of past school records, number of years in school and age.

From a British Based System

Students who have attended reception and are about to begin Year 1 in a British system, and are 5 years old by August 31 of current year will be placed in Kindergarten at AISL. Year 2 students who are 6 years old by August 31 of current year will be placed in Grade 1 at AISL. Thereafter applicants will be placed according to age and the number of years that the school records indicate the student has been in school. From Schools with Different Calendars

In most cases, students coming from schools where the academic year does not correspond with AISL’s August - June calendar (e.g. South Africa, Australia, South Korea) will continue in the same grade level when they enter AISL (e.g. a child who has completed grade 4 in Australia and arrives midway through our school year will complete the rest of the year in 4th grade before moving onto 5th grade).

Any initial placement is tentative, and the school may advise a change of grade level or class either after the child’s abilities have been assessed or, in certain circumstances, may withdraw the placement.

Please note that AISL does not have special classes for students who have been defined as gifted or who have been diagnosed with specific learning or behavioral disabilities. Parents whose children require special services of any kind should provide the school with any evaluations and other relevant information for admissions review to determine the appropriateness of admission based on their ability to succeed in the standard curriculum in a normal classroom setting.

AISL may require entrance testing for all applicants.

1. Receipt for payment of application fee from AISL Business Office

2. AISL’s confidential school report to be completed by your child’s school

3. Copy of data page from applicant's passport(s) or birth certificate of the applicant

4. Copy of data page from both parents’ passports (where applicable)

5. Copy of US passport from primary parent to be employed in Nigeria (This is necessary in order to be considered for priority categories 3 and 6 - see next tab)

6. Parent's STR Visa/CERPAC to be considered for priority categories 3 and 4 (where applicable)

7. Recent 3" x 4" headshot photograph of child (max filesize 1MB)

8. Child's immunization records including: Hepatitis B (HepB) | Diphtheria | Tetanus | Pertussis (DtaP) | H. Influenza Type b (Hib) | Polio | Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) | Typhoid | Varicella (Chicken Pox) | Yellow Fever

9. ALL school reports for the last two (2) years (current school year final report to be sent as soon as possible), including transcripts for grades 9 to 11 (where applicable)

10. ALL standardized testing results, to include any individual education plans (IEPs) and psycho-educational evaluations (separate PDFs)

11. Completed online application for admission (can be started before all documents are submitted; marked complete upon receipt of all required documents)

Please note: while you may submit the application prior to collecting the documents, an application is not considered complete (nor will it be reviewed by the committee) until all the necessary documents have been submitted. Applications will not be be processed until the application fee is paid and confirmed by AISL's business office. 

1. Dependents of US State Department & Consular employees, AISL faculty & staff, and Special Assessment companies (see below definition)
2. Dependents of Guaranteed Enrollment Plan companies
3. Dependents US citizens who are on expatriate assignment in Nigeria
4. Dependents of non-US citizens who are on expatriate assignment in Nigeria
5. Siblings and previously enrolled students
6. Dependents of US citizens who are permanent residents of Nigeria
7. Dependents of non-US citizens who are permanent residents of Nigeria

Special Assessment Companies: 
Chevron, ExxonMobil, Schlumberger, and Shell. Dependents of AISL alumni (being defined as someone who attended AISL for at least two full years) will be entitled to be considered for admission at one category higher than their current level, to a maximum of category 4.

AISL does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion or sex.

The AISL school year starts in August and ends in June. Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply as early as possible, as the school may be at capacity in certain grade levels.

While school is in session, the expected processing time for applications that are complete is five to 10 working days. 

Applications submitted during the months of June and July may take up to three weeks for application review, processing and admission decisions. To help ensure that your child's application is complete, plan ahead and request that AISL's confidential report be completed before your child's school closes for the summer.

Note: An application will not be processed for admission until the Admissions officer has received all the necessary documents, as outlined in the Requirements. 

Application Review

The Admissions Director will review the application and contact you if further information, documents or screening are required. Only when an application is complete is reviewed by the Elementary, Middle, or High School Admissions Committees for an admissions decision.

Offer of Placement

If there is an opening in the appropriate grade level, and your child meets all admission criteria, you will be contacted by the Admission’s Director by email with an offer of admission to which you must reply.

Deny Placement

An applicant may be denied admission when there are concerns about academic, social or emotional stability and when AISL is unable to offer a program to meet adequately an individual student’s learning needs. If this is the case, the Admissions Director will contact you by email to let you know that the application was not successful.

An applicant may be called in for an entrance assessment when a vacancy occurs at the appropriate grade level as determined by the student age/grade level guidelines. The entrance assessment may include: assessment in basic skills, vocabulary, reading comprehension, spelling, mathematics and written expression. Students are expected to score at or above grade level in the above areas in order to be granted admission.

 

If an application meets admission requirements, but the applicant is applying for enrollment in a grade that is full, then that applicant will be placed on the student waiting list. The waiting list is maintained in a priority manner as to the date of the completed application (inclusive of when all documents were submitted) and priority category. Because of AISL's Admission Policy, an applicant's position on the student wait list may change if there are subsequent applications from families from other categories.

It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian of students on the waitlist to email the Admissions Office and update their child's file at least every 6 (six) months to keep their child's file active. This can also be done using AISL's Admissions Portal. Failure to do so will result in the child being removed from the waitlist and her/his application will be deactivated. Only applications that are complete will be considered for admission when spaces become available.
