Boy and Cub Scouts
Troop 3803 of the Boys Scouts of America is based in Lagos, Nigeria. It is composed of boys ages 11 to 18. On the Scouting Adventure, you advance through ranks and earn merit badges. Some of the merit badges that we are able to offer in Nigeria are Climbing, Citizenship of the World, Citizenship of the Nation, Citizenship of the Community, and Camping. (Due to our remote location, we are unable to offer all of the merit badges that are available.) Ranks include Second Class, Life, and Eagle. There are several ranks that Scouts can achieve, including Patrol Leader and, the highest, Senior Patrol Leader.
A troop consists of a Scout Master and an Assistant Scout Master (both adults), as well as several meaningful positions that the boys can hold. Our local troop meets every other Sunday.
Since 1930, the Boy Scouts of America has helped younger boys through Cub Scouting. It is a year-round family program designed for boys who are in the first grade through fifth grade (or 7, 8, 9, and 10 years of age). Parents, leaders, and organizations work together to achieve the purposes of Cub Scouting. Currently, Cub Scouting is the largest of the BSA's three traditional membership divisions. (The others are Boy Scouting and Venturing.)
The 10 purposes of Cub Scouting are:
- Character Development
- Spiritual Growth
- Good Citizenship
- Sportsmanship and Fitness
- Family Understanding
- Respectful Relationships
- Personal Achievement
- Friendly Service
- Fun and Adventure
- Preparation for Boy Scouts
