Elementary Vocal Music (K-4)

Grades Pre-K - 2

The objective in the beginning of the year is to see that all the children enjoy singing, playing instruments, and moving to music. They will be learning a variety of general songs and appropriate holiday songs during the first four months. These songs will include the use of all rhythm instruments available and the use of the melodic instruments in our music room. Lessons to help them appreciate music better will also be incorporated into the music program. They will also begin to sight-read music using do, re, mi, so, and la.

Each 2nd grade student will perform twice during the year in the music room in front of their classmates. I will announce a given day and on that particular day each child must perform something musical. If your child takes music lesson of some type this is a good opportunity for he/she to demonstrate their talent. If they do not take lessons, they can choose to sing or perform a song we have studied in class. Basically anything to do with music is accepted during this day. This performance is part of the child’s grade for the term.

Grades 3-4

They will continue the various items that K-2 will be doing plus learning to play the autoharp (a string instrument), begin a unit of singing rounds and participate in a performance day also. Third (possibly) and fourth graders (for sure) will also begin to play the recorder this year. We do have recorders in school, but if you wish to purchase one, please do. A limited number of recorders are available to buy in school at the beginning of the year. These are Yamaha recorders brought in from the United States.

Both grades will continue their learning of being able to sight read music using so1, la1 do, re, mi, so, la, and do1.
