Greetings from the President of the Board of Directors!

Board President, Mike Bowen with Mr. OK.Welcome to the American International School of Lagos (AISL)!

The AISL mission is to provide a quality American-style education to its student population.  Core curriculum instruction from Pre-K to 10th grade, as well as sports, music and band, art, languages, and other electives are included in the educational offerings.  AISL additionally supports numerous after-school and extra-curricular activities with its campus facilities, staff, and community volunteers.  With over 650 students now attending and representing over 40 nationalities, AISL is also able to supplement the educational experience through sharing of diverse cultures within its student body.

Direction for the school is set by a nine member Board of Directors, with eight parent-directors elected from the Parent’s Association and one director appointed by the United States Ambassador to Nigeria.  The Board elects its own officers and selects and works with the Superintendent who manages the day to day operation of the school through an Administrative Team.  The Teaching faculty is selected through local and international recruiting and is credentialed in American as well as international teaching methods.  Parents are encouraged to actively participate in classroom activities and through the Parent Teacher Organization which organizes special events and efforts to benefit the school.

The focus of the PTO, Administration, Faculty, and the Board of Directors is to continuously improve the performance and offerings of AISL to be the best American International School in the world and an asset to the Lagos community.  Whether it involves improving the school’s curriculum, upgrading facilities, or recruiting the best teachers, AISL constantly seeks to raise its benchmark in every area.  At a recent visit from Mr. William Scotty, from the US State Department - Office of Overseas Schools, we were told that AISL is a leader in American International education and a great school with great vision for serving its community.

Of particular note is our High School project, where AISL will offer for the first time a 10th grade program in 2007-2008 expanding to the first 12th grade graduating class in 2010.  This task also involves the implementation of new high school curriculum, including certified AP and IB programs, and the building of a second campus in Lagos.  These monumental efforts have received overwhelming support from the total AISL community and reflect our steadfast commitment to program improvement.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I wish all a successful school year.  Should you have any feedback, ideas, or suggestions, the Board of Directors as well as the entire School Staff are ready to listen.

Thanks for your interest in AISL!

Michael Bowen
President, Board of Directors
